Operating System Not Found

Computer shut down by itself and when it was rebooted it said operating system not found. Have tried the restore disk and it came up saying that the hard drive could not be found. Checked the settings and all are set to auto. However system still comes up saying hard drive cannot be located. What do I need to do to get it to run
