Optical drives disappearing in Win XP

Several friends of mine have different branded laptops with authentic Win XP home installed – after normal usage, winxp fails to recognise any optical drives (even external ones and replaced ones) or if finally showing in device manager, says it is working fine but it is obvious it is not since cds cannot be read (nor dvds) – any ideas?

(updated drivers and patches also do not solve this)
