Oracle 8i services not starting on XP

We were able to install Oracle 8i on a Dell Think Pad running XP. We can’t get the database to start automatically from the services panel when you boot the machine. Both the listener and the database service will start and run fine if you start them from the command prompt.. Anyone have any ideas?
