Outlook vs Outlook express

I have a system that uses the outlook express email.
I opened up the outlook express and checked my email, then after speaking with a friend, we were discussing outlook. I opened up the outlook and saw that I had several messages that were recently received that went to Outlook, and NOT the outlook express? Yet I also have gotten new email that went to express, and not outlook! Any ideas as to what is causing this?
