OWA Wen Access, FQDN, and SSL

Question:
I installed a verisign 128bit SSL cert on my web server to secure OWA. My users are using to just typing https://[server name]/exchange But now that gives a DNS error. You can only access the site by typing https://[server.susq.com]/exchange. Why do I have to use the FQDN?
