Parallel to USB

I used the ACK signal on the parallel port to count pulses. Because some new laptops do not have parallel ports, I would like to switch to USB. I’ve considered using a serial communications device & driver.

Is this a good idea? If so, is there a similar serial interrupt that I could use?
