Partitioned drive on Win XP locks up

I have a partitioned drive that locks up within 10 seconds of accessing the drive. Operating system is Win XP. Partition size is 104 GB of which 32 GB is being used. No problem with C drive or external drive that is attached via USB. I’ve tried running chkdsk several times but it stops everytime at 58%. Any help on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
