pc restarts every time antivirus runs…

hello,
my computer (running XP professional) restarts every time i run an antivirus scan. i tried AVG and Kaspersky – both with the same result. also, the computer restarts when i try to connect to windows update.
In addition, many times the computer restarts a number of times upon starting up, until it finally starts working normally.
