Performance Problem

by daveg . Updated 24 years, 11 months ago

Informix database server on HP-UX – 20 modern PC clients – connecting using
ODBC and ADO inside VB6 – all connected over WAN.

Problem – poor VB skills and client-server skills in-house. Excellent
Informix skills in-house. VB programme writtenby 3rd party with no
Informix skills. Consequence very poor performance across WAN – taking on
average over 1 minute to return simple reads from database. Is this normal?
Other WAN traffic not a problem. Users will increase to 1,000s with about
100 concurrent at any one time. Performance was poor with 9 concurrent
users – but improved with our patches – see below. Now with 20 concurrent
users performance is very poor.

Would appreciate a get well plan. Already done a few changes to VB code
which has had some improvement. Major re-engineering in the short-term is
not an option. We need some quick-win solutions in the short term.
Informix DBA states that the UNIX box hardly breaks into a sweat – massive
memory and CPUs and answers queries very fast from a database point of view.
Unsure though about the comms out of the UNIX box onto the WAN and onto the
client PC. Have suspicians about requests being dealt with sequentially.

Any ideas much appreciated.
