*Please Help* Peer to Peer Connections

I have 2 PC’s, one running Windows 98, the other running Windows XP Home. I have attached a cross over cable from the NIC card in the PC with XP to an external USB to RJ45 converter. Can anyone please suggest the best configuration in Network Connections to get these machines to see each other? What protocols should I load? Should I load multiple protocols? Please give me a good detailed rundown of how I should set up this peer to peer connection.
