Please help with my 3 month headache

by dmorel77 . Updated 17 years, 8 months ago

July of 07 I bought an old panasonic toughbook cf-27 running Windows 2000. The computer worked fine for months but I encountered A virus that created a seperate administrator profile allowing me limited access to install or remove software and/or hardware. I began deleting files that looked like they were associated to the viral program, just by matching the program name (which I dont remember now) to the abbreviated file names. Durring that process the computer shut down and I just knew I had messed up when I restarted it and for the 3 months since I have encountered error message “NTLDR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart.” I don’t have access to the safe mode but if I press f2 right after pressing power I can get to the bios screen. While I know I’m not the first to encounter this problem, when I googled it I read tinyempire’s page on the subject and downloaded their “fixntldr.exe” this got my hopes up till option one gave me an error message “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.” Options 2 through 8 gave me a system hardware configuration error message. Option 9 freezes the computer and option 10 reboots back into the disk options screen. So I figured that if I tried installing “windows xp sp1” downloaded from microsoft website maybe it would format the drive (no luck). The new error message reads “INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 18. Setup cannot continue press any key to exit.” If I try running w/o a disk in the drive I still get NTLDR. Now to top it all off, I can’t find the “any” key on my keyboard. Okay so that last part was a bad joke but everything else is serious and I would be very greatful to any or all who could assist. Sorry it’s so long but I think details count.
