Possible DNS Naming Mistake?

My users are unable to see our company website through our domain. I believe the reason why they cannot navigate to our website is because I made the mistake of configuring my server 2008 as XXXXX.com insted of XXXXX.local. Could this be the reason why? If so how can i fix this.
