Print spooler keeps shutting down

I have a user on a Acer Travelmate 4220 running XP Pro. Several days after installing a printer object for a networked Xerox Phaser 8560 color printer using a TCP/IP port the print spooler shuts down at startup. I first assumed it was a bad print object, but could not access the Faxes and Printers window without starting the spooler. But as soon as I try to do anything with the print objects the print spooler shuts down again.
