Printer slow to respond

How do I change the priority the system gives to printing. Symptom is I try to print (Lexmark X73) and the Control Program box pops up. Then it can stay anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes before printing actualy starts. I tried a reinstall of XP Home and the problem persists, which leaves me to beleive it’s a registryt setting I want. Also, used Twaek-XP for a few items but not printing.
