printing problems in word 97 and excel

We are setting up a hp laserjet1100 on a dell latitude laptop. printing works but not witin word and excel. If you print a word document from explorer it prints but once you open word and try and printing from there it just bombs out and returns youto the desktop. Any help will be appreciated.
