Printing problems with 4.7, 4.8 client

I am currently using client 4.6 Sp2 and would like to upgrade to 4.8. I have tried 4.7 and 4.8 and have the same problem. When I try and print from an application like Word 97, the spool service (spoolss) consumes memory and never prints. What is the fix for this?
