I just started as a systems administrator for a company. They have an AD environment.
When I create new users or join a new computer to the domain. The classic startmenu is forced on the computer and I can’t change it back to the XP style. Initially the option in group policy was not even configured to force the classic startmenu. I setup a new policy just to disable the “force classic startmenu” I applied it to an OU that I put our users into. Still the classic menu was used and I couldn’t change it to the XP style. I did an RSOP on the computer with any user account and it shows the default domain policy is setting the “force classic startmenu” to enable. I checked the default domain policy and this option is still not configured. For an experiment, I configured this option in the default domain policy. Refreshed policy on all computers involved. RSOP still shows that the default domain policy is setting this option to enable. I check it again and it is set to disable. I can go into the registry of the computer and change the setting needed to get the XP style menu to work. This will stay for a few days and then go back to the classic menu and remove the ability to change to the XP style.
If I enforce my policy to disable the classic startmenu, I can use the XP style menu. However, every few days it changes back to the classic style. I can just go into the startmenu properties and change it back to the XP style.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this problem?
