Problem with peer to peer network

I wanted to set up a small peer to peer network with two computers. One is win 2000 and the other is win XP. I use a D-Link 100/10mbps switch and Baynet 100/10mbps NICs. When I connect the swith and cables to NICs. It appears that connected to the network. But I cannot ping or access the other computer. I tried both dynamic and Manual IP addresses with the same subnet. And I use straight cables. thanks
