problems with CD drive in Windows XP

I have Windowx XP and suddenly I can not access my CD drive. I have accessed the device manager and it says that ‘this device is working properly’. I have used my anti virus program, which I do regularly, and my system is clean, never being inffected by viruses or worms.

The last thing I have done, which is actually the first time, with my CD drive is ripping some music from a music CD in order to add to a PowerPoint presentation.

For whatever reason, my CD drive is now unreachable. Not even data files such pdf and word documents can be accessed. In other words, the CD drive is dead. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
