Problems With CD Drives

I have had an ongoing problem with the two CD drives on an HP Pavilion I am using. They only seem to read a disc’s contents the first time a disc is inserted, and do not refresh with subsequent discs. Sometimes the only way to get the drives to read a new disc is to reboot the system. Is there a solution for this? The operating system is Windows XP SP 2.
