Problems With Configuring Hardware Raid 1 on Adaptec 3200s RAID controller

I am building a server. I have two identical IBM ultra star scsi drives and an adaptec 3200s raid controller. I am trying to configure the disks with raid 1 before installing windows 2003 server. I get the message from the controller card and disks bios “status: optimal, not set into hardware”
Can anyone advise on how to overcome this problem so that I can build the array and procceed with the instalation?
