problems with formatting a hard drive

I tried formatting an old hard drive that is working before and i received the following message:
Trying to recover allocation unit 26,345
and after about 4/5hrs i received the message:

Format terminated.
what must be the likely cause of this problem, and is there a way of reviving this hard drive.
