I’ve got a problem with connecting a computer on a local LAN. I administer about 10 computers running Windows XP SP2 that are connected to a server running SUSE 9. I have a problem, I recently added this older computer on the network, and couldn’t do so no matter what I tried, other computers could see it on the network, they can all ping each other, but none can access its shared files/folders, while the old computer can access other computers. I get the windows message that I don’t have permission to access this network file.
Details of what I did follow, but let me just say that I was willing to sweep this one under the rug until had to reinstall this one computer that WAS fully working and sharing on the network, and then after the reinstallation, I got the same problem, so I am desperate to solve this.
* file & printer sharing – on
* all computers in same network/workgroup
* added windows firewall exceptions
* LAN Properties > TCP/IP Properties > Advanced > WINS > Enable NetBios – yes
* My Docs > Share -> Permissions -> Everyone – enabled everything in this shared folder (simple file sharing turned OFF)
* Guest account – enabled and turned on
* in the end I went to regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\Lsa
value name : restrictanonymous – set to 0
value name : limitblankpassworduse – set to 0
restrictanonymoussam – I didn’t want to touch this
* went to Admin.Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > User rights assignments – added Access this computer from network (Everyone)
* Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options – on Network Access checked everything, seemed fine
I also searched online and saw that enabling/installing NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Control Protocol solved the same problem for other people, but I am still at loss here. It is quite possible that it is something small and ridiculously simple that I’ve overlooked… 🙁 Please help!
