Problems with taskbar in XT Prof

Using XP Prof. – Usually taskbar on desktop in about 1/4 inch wide and I keep it at bottom of screen. Now it is about 1 inch wide. How do I get it to go back to prev. setting? This happened when I was trying to get volume icon back on taskbar – it disappeared. I used Help and did everything it says, but I still don’t see this icon. It was there before. Can anyone help with these ridiculous problem? I also had taskbar move to top of screen. Somehow, I managed to get it back to bottom but I don’t know how I did it. Will appreciate some help and tks for all help in the past.
