processes will not stop

Has any one seen where you open like word and or outlook and in the processes you get the OUTLOOK.EXE process but when you close the pogram the processes dose not quit. then when you open outlook agin it just creates another process of OUTLOOK.EXE and it leaves the old process running while running the new one. if any one has any idea why the computer is doing this.
