processor differences

What are the differences between the Athlon Thunderbird, Declon(sp?), XP, & MP processors??
I would not get a Celeron, for example, when I could get Pentium MMX, and I wonder whether any different Athlon model designations refer to crippled versions. At work, we recently bought an XP, and I wonder whether we should have gone for the MP??
