Processor goes crazy! Help!

by wireless010101 . Updated 19 years ago

I’d welcome any ideas on this:
Today following a wake-up of my XP laptop, the processor started going really busy for no reason. The task manager showed LuCom~1.exe as top user, but I couldn’t stop it (permission denied)

I logged on as admin, and found no LuCom, but did find that executing file, and it is supposedly a Symantec file. OK, so maybe Symantec was implementing an update (as admin, it no longer had an internet connection), but then no notice appeared. Also, as admin, I found nothing using more than a few % of processor, although the graphic showed major activity. What was doing this?

The activity never halted, even when I was switching between users.(logging in/out), and varied between 20 and 100%, often clipping. This went on for about 10 long minutes and then stopped.

Logged on both as a user and admin, this activity definitely slowed down anything I tried to do, and was very annoying and worrisome.

Any ideas on what it was and how to stop it?

Many thanks!!
Rob.
