program performed an illegal operation

I have an HP scanner model (21ooc). Each time i try to scan a document,midway into the scan it stops, showing me half of the image. It shows the message “This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down”. I have tried reinstalling the driver but the problem persists. Please i need someone to help me out. (The scanner is a USB device)
