Programs cannot find IE

When I click on a hyperlink from an application such as Yahoo Messanger, Word, etc, and do not have an IE Browser window open an error occurs telling me that it cannot find IE. However, if I click on a hyperlink with IE Browser open, it works fine…

I am running WinXP and IE6.0.

Any adive on how to fix this would be greatly apprerciated.
