Protocol to use in W98 with cable modem

I have 4 computers networked with a 5 port hub in which the cable modem is using the 5th ports uplink. I like to share files and play games over the LAN but not sure on the protocol to use. I have IPX/SPX installed on all, but it just seems slooow. Also, I have to consider the security issue with the cable modem and not have file and print sharing enabled on TCP/IP. Should I have a secondary TCP/IP, NetBEUI or can I do something with IPX/SPX? Some games only use the IPX/SPX protocol on a LAN. Thanks for any response. Fudgstu
