Pursue Honours of Full time employment?

by miikey87 . Updated 17 years, 8 months ago

Good afternoon all,

I am hoping to have some input from other fellow students, employees and employers within the IT industry.

I am a 20 year old student only 3 weeks away from completing my undergraduate Bachelor of Science. I have majored in Information Systems Development, Internet Computing and a minor in networking Fundamentals. I have recently been sent an email from the university encouraging us to think about pursuing another year to complete honours in Information Technology.

I have been asking around through friends and the university to try and further understand why I should pursue honors. Whilst I know I would enjoy an extra year and get to study and analyse something in a lot more depth that I have before, I do realise that I could also use this year to start full time work, hopefully earn a better wage and gain more experience.

Currently I have been working part time whilst studying in a support role for staff and clients of an organisation and learning system administration and project management, which I have been using for experience. If I do decide to pursue honours I will continue my part time role for more experience.

I was hoping to find out if other people had completed honours study and why they may pursued this path or if not why not? Would it look better for job prospects that I have furthered my education past my degree in addition to the part time employment in the industry and the certifications that I am currently studying towards (MCSE, CCNA and a few others).

Still after four years of studying I am no closer to understanding where I see myself in the industry other than away from coding as it is not my forte.

I look forward to hearing some responses and opinions.

Regards,

Mike
