Question about Active Directory Site Replication

I noticed in Active Directory Sites and Services, that you can manually add connections (‘replicate from’) for domain controllers in each site.

Does doing this speed up replication?

How about site links? If you do not manually add connections in the sites themselves, are you at the mercy of the replication interval configured on the site links?
