RAID-5 Enlarge Partition

by tegal . Updated 15 years, 3 months ago

I have a Win2k3 server also running Exchange2k3. There are 3x36Gb drives RAID-5 (hardware) and partitioned to c: d: and e:

The c: (8GB) holds system and a few apps. d: (30Gb) holds data, e: (29Gb) exchange.

My problem is that the c: drive has less than 500Mb of space. Not enough to install SP2 and rapidly running out with each update from MS!

I’ve been reading around some posts in the forum about how to enlarge a partition, but they don’t often refer to RAID-5 partitions. I have 9Gb free on d: and 12Gb free on e:.

Is there a way to enlarge my c: drive that is relativley painless and ideally cost free (small charity, precious little cash)?

I did not set up this server and it’s a bit annoying that apps are also installed on the d: and e: drives (i.e. not all in the same place), I’ve read that ideally the c: drive only holds the windows system, but I’m wary of putting too many more apps on the exchange partition or into the data partition. Anyone any thoughts on that?

I have space for another 3 drives, so in theory could just buy another 3 drives RAID-5 and shift all the data/exchange onto these and leave the original 3 drives for system and apps (oh how I wish!) but cash is the issue there and I still have too little space on the c: drive. Can you have 2x RAID-5 sets together simultaneously? Or would it have to be one big fat hairy RAID-5?

Thanks in advance.
