Man I was dumb tonight. For some reason I thought I would go ahead and run the “error checking” feature in XP. (“Right-click C Drive – Properties – Tools – error checking”) I checked both available options, and rebooted. It goes ahead and starts the checking process, ONLY to find error after error. About 45 minutes later, it’s done. It boots back intot he OS, and only a handful of services were running, and I could not start the ones that were not. My Network connections were gone, it was like the computer was in a safe mode, but with even less functionality.
My only guess is that my particular computer configuration caused the issue OR the “invalid errors”, were actually not invalid but yet a result of NTFS configurations. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2, and I installed Vista Business on a seperate partition for a dual boot configuration. While running the chkdsk, I received countless errors. It kept saying the following: “Removing Invalid Security ID, Replacing with Default Security ID on file “X””
(X being a number) I have searched, but can’t find anything regarding this and XP.
I have now recovered from a backup, but anyone have any ideas what happened? Is running chkdsk actually worth it? I haven’t run it in a long time before tonight and I was doing just fine. =]
