Re-applying after getting fired

by bbell . Updated 17 years ago

Almost one year ago, I was fired from my job.

Long story short, my former boss and I did not agree on key aspects of how our department was managed. My suggestions for improvement seemed to fall on deaf ears, so I resorted posting a few anonymous suggestions to HR. With the help of HR things in our department did change for the better (weekly meetings, formal project management getting away from doing everything on the fly).

As is often the case, the change was very necessary and somewhat painful. Just as things were looking up and I started to see a long-term future for myself at the company, I was fired for what my former boss called a discrepancy of the data stored on our off-site tape media (our disk based backups were rock solid). “The what if our 20+ story building suddenly burned to the ground” scenario was used in justifying my termination.

A hands-on manager was brought in to perform my job as well as manage the help-desk function at the company. From what I have heard from my former co-workers, this person is doing a great job and is well liked.

Recently, I learned that they are going to post an opening for my old job that will report into the new manager.

I was very well liked at the company and always received positive feedback from everyone. Being without benefits (I’m married and we have a young child) and forced to take a significant pay cut due to market conditions, I am considering re-applying for the job after it is officially posted.

Yay or nay?
