Re-naming Exchange 5.5 users

Our previous admin was in the habit of renaming NT4 accounts, which altered the Exchange user account as well. However, the directory name for the account in user advanced properties page maintains the mail box directory name with the old user’s name, rather than the new one. Does this cause any problems?? Should I delete and recreate the accounts to remove these references??
