“Reboot and Select proper Boot device”

by labrat . Updated 19 years, 11 months ago

I have a 6 month old laptop that just started balking on power up. I get this message when turning on my laptop:

“Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press any key”

This only happens on a power-up start. At that point, no keys do anything–until I press ctrl-alt-del and it will start. Once it starts, I can restart it with no problems. If I turn it off, on power-up, I get the msg again. It will boot to a bootable CD on power-up without the msg. It is like it just can’t find the HDD on a power-up–but then is OK to restart from the error screen.

This is my personnal system and it is clean of spyware and viruses. I turned off all boot devices except HDD in BIOS–still have problem. I reseated the hard drive in case there was a slight connection problem. I did just install an iPod. Thought maybe that could have corrupted something. ??? Any suggestions for what to try next?
