Recognize my new modem

Help! How can I get my Windows 98 PC to recognize my new modem? It’s a Compaq Presario, and I’m having problems with my internal modem, so I am trying to set up an EXTERNAL modem. The OS doesn’t seem to want to recognize its existence.
