Recovery from crash after virus scan?

I am posting this for my son Dana, who has a new HD desktop with Microsoft Vista home premium. He has had a lot of crashes in trying to install software. Most recently he used his Norton anti-virus scan and it was followed by a total crash. He got various messages like consult mfr, or no problems, etc. Can you suggest how to recover from this crash?
