Redirecting to lpt1 in a Terminal Server session

I am attempting to connect to a TS and print to my local printer from an old DOS based program on the TS which only prints to lpt1. The client computer is running XP pro and the server is Windows 2k3. When I attempt to redirect the printer using “net use lpt1 \\ws125\hplj1160 persistent:yes I get a failure to log on message. Is it nessary to be connecting through a VPN rather than through a TS for this kind of printing to work?
