Reformatted WinXP Pro, USB now unresponsive

I recently did a clean install of WinXP Pro. Now Windows does not recognize anything I plug into the USB ports. Furthermore, when I do plug a device into a USB port my ps/2 mouse stops functioning until I reboot.

Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
