Remote Access Troubleshooting

I am having really strange but inconsitent problems with remote access, some times users cannot get connected at all, sometimes it connects but does not map the network drives and sometimes it will connect fine but only show part of the network denying users access to relevant parts of the network….I really dont know where to start troubleshooting this one.
