With the ease of use of Remote Desktop, more and more IT support are using this method to support computers within their Lan/Wan. When logging Remotely to any of the PC’s, there has not been any problems worth noting. However, the Windows Server 2003 is another matter.
Previously, a KVM switch was used to switch between two or more servers from one Monitor / Keyboard / Mouse. To do away with the expense and cabling mess a lot have replaced this scenario with the use of Remote Desktop; when logging in as Administrator it seemed to work great except that some programs ran everytime someone else logged in using Remote desktop. Backup didn’t work because all of a sudden certain files could not be unlocked. When attaching a monitor/mouse/keyboard to these file servers and logging in normally, the problems went away.
So, here is my question and challenge; how do you make a Windows Server 2003 treat a Remote Desktop logon just like a PC; only one Administrator logon at a time, and no programs or additional files are locked.
This would also alleviate the problem of starting services again set up as “Automatic”.
I am very interested in seeing the most simplified way to address this problem.
