Remote Desktop with D-Link DES-1108 ethernet switch

I am trying to access my work computer from home. Both machines are XP with all remote desktop setting enabled, firewall exceptions allowed etc… Home goes through Linksys wrt160n router and work has a D-link des-1108 ethernet switch. I’ve tried connecting with both inside IP addresses and “outside” IP addresses. Do I have to forward a port? Can I forward ports with a switch? Any suggestions would be VERY MUCH appreciated!!
