Remove Internet Explorer from Window 95

I attempted to remove IE (don’t know what version) from a Windows 95 machine to be able to install IE5 to the machine. It appears that the IE files are deleted from the harddrive; however everytime I attempt to install IE5 it gives me an error thatan earlier installation did not complete, reboot the machine. However, no earlier installation continued after rebooting. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?
