Removing Infrared Port

I’m using an older IBM with built in Fast Infrared Port which Win2000 picks up. I want to uninstall this device and use the resources for something else. I can uninstall and everything looks fine but when I reboot this port is back. What do I need to do to uninstall it permanently?
