Removing slave harddisk prevents boot?

I am running Windows 2000 Pro with a Primary Master and a Primary Slave harddisk. If I remove the Primary Slave disk my pc stops booting during the autodetect process of the POST. Can anyone tell me why this happens and how I can remove the slave disk.
