Repairing a dead HP Laserjet 5

My school’s LJ5 acted up just as the term ended, requiring us to spend $$ for a new laser printer. The LJ prints solid black horizontal bars across each page, even on printer-generated test pages. Can this sort of behavior be fixed (cheaply!) or should I just junk the old boy?
