Ricoh MP7040A into Hewlett Packard

I have an old HP Pavillion 8513 Pentium 3 500MHz and have recently purchased a Ricoh MP7040A burner.. I have tried to designate the burner as the slave drive and the cdrom as primary. Do I need to get a driver for the burner or is this a hardware conflict problem…. or something else??
