route and gateway

Hi

i am new in the IT and lack of the knowledge in network field.i have some question hope can get some answer from you.

What is route and gateway, i hope can get better understanding from you. Please correct a the below, for any mistake.

1.) Is the route means we can have a lot of route in the network.

imagine the route is road, means we need define a road to pass a traffic to different subnet.

2.)is the gateway is when we are using particular subnet connect to network, so we need have gateway. gateway IP will be one of the route in the network for us to pass traffic.
